What is better to use: SCCM or Intune?

Whether you use Microsoft ConfigMgr (SCCM) or Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Intune), you may be considering migrating from one deployment system to another, implementing new best practices, or simply figuring out how both systems work in detail.

What is the difference: SCCM and Intune?

The difference between Microsoft ConfigMgr (SCCM) or Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Intune) can be described through different factors like the possibility to deploy apps, patch management, remote control, etc.

To understand the difference. Let’s start with the basics:

  • Microsoft ConfigMgr is a far more traditional way to manage the computer system. The SCCM integrated console enables the management feature of Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V), Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (Med-V), Citrix XenApp, Microsoft Forefront, and Windows Phone applications from a single place.
  • Microsoft Endpoint Manager is a cloud-based system and one of the essential components in the Enterprise & Mobility Suite (EMS).

Microsoft developed both products and became a part of a suite of products called Microsoft EndPoint Management Suite.

The capabilities of both systems are different, but fortunately, you can consider which one suits you best by exploring the following criteria:

Platforms. Depending on your organization’s platform, concentrate on the solution that complies with your corporate platform.

Compliance and deployment. A deployment system helps to manage software, updates, and operating system for your organization.

SCCM and Intune co-management?

You can use both Intune and SCCM to manage Windows 10 systems using a configuration Microsoft calls co-management. According to Microsoft, you control which workloads you switch the authority from Configuration Manager to Intune. The important note is that Windows 10 mobile devices don’t support co-management.

How to deploy applications to Microsoft ConfigMgr (SCCM) or Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Intune)?

For the proper SCCM deployment, the system administrator should set up install & uninstall commands for the proper SCCM deployment and create an application package. In Apptimized, the system administrator can track all application updates and the package application by himself or request it via one of our services. Then it can be deployed to Microsoft ConfigMgr or Microsoft Endpoint Manager without the need to leave the system, download third-party software or fill the pop-ups.

Options how to create an application package with the help of Apptimized:

  • Workspace – holistic packaging environment with the ability to create discovery documentation, package, and test applications on your own on cloud VMs.
  • Catalogue – a fast and secure service that prepares the most common pre-packaged applications based on best practices. The total amount of supported applications is more than 250.
  • Factory – service of preparing app packages of any complexity and any requirements by highly qualified staff.
  • Care – a unique service, where our specialist will track all your application portfolio for updates, then package it for you based on best practices and send it to SCCM or Intune, so you will simply deploy it in a few clicks.

Apptimized Workspace, Factory, as well as Care – support deployment under Intune. These services can produce Intunewin format packages, the only format transferred under the Intune portal.

Recently Apptimized has started supporting SCCM packages deployment. SCCM packages are the technology for containerizing a program for deployment in SCCM, used in Configurational Manager 2007. It differs in the absence of detection methods when creating a package, and separate packages are created to install the application and remove it (only one command is available in the package).

SCCM packages are more suited for the following type of programs:

  • Scripts that run on a recurring schedule and can’t use global evaluation.
  • “One-off” scripts that don’t need to be continually monitored.
  • Administrative tools that don’t install an application on a computer.

As a modern standard of SCCM deployment, the Application is supported by Apptimized from working with this deployment system.

How to migrate your estate from SCCM to Intune

We’ve already described the pros and cons of each deployment system. That’s why sometimes, after some testing, companies are changing their management strategies. For example, they might want to transfer their infrastructure into a cloud-based tool and use conditional access policies. Such reasons may also precede this. The absence of third-party integration, programmability, rich scalability, and custom report creation under the Microsoft ConfigMgr may cause trouble. The solution is transitioning from traditional on-premises (SCCM) to a new digital cloud service (Intune).

Take a closer look at how Apptimized can help you.

A variety of Apptimized services supports the migration, and the whole process is fast, safe, and user-friendly. Furthermore, using the best practices on the market, our specialists have implemented special features for importing applications from SCCM and packaging them in an intunewin format for subsequent deployment in Intune.
